Riad Le Pèlerin was my home-from-home on a whirlwind 4-night work trip to the region of Marrakech last month. I chose this riad for its location, traditional architecture, stylish interiors and its menu of Moroccan dishes with a twist.
The riad is tucked away in the medina in an area known as Dar El Bacha (the house of the Pacha), after the eighteenth-century palace built for the Pasha of Marrakech, Thani El Glaoui and now a museum. It’s on the edge of the bustling souks, within walking distance of all the historic sites and the vibrant new town of Gueliz. Ideally, it’s close to transport links out of the city, so I can visit the weavers who handloom our wool and cotton blankets in the surrounding area.

Traditional Architecture And Relaxing Interiors
When visiting Marrakecch, my preference is to stay in a riad, a traditional townhouse configured around a courtyard or garden. There are over 800 riads in Marrakech and they vary greatly in size, style and services offered. Riad Le Pèlerin caught my eye for its stylish blend of traditional Moroccan architecture with modern interiors. Expect intricate woodwork, contemporary tiling, natural earthy tones and plant-filled open spaces.

The seven bedrooms are bright, tastefully decorated in soft neutral colours and feature local hand-woven textiles, carved wooden furniture, and artisanal baskets and ceramics.

Authentic Moroccan Food By Chef Rachida
The large roof terrace is a great place to relax and have dinner after a busy day. The food is delicious thanks to Rachida, the in-house chef (pictured), who prepares Moroccan dishes from fresh, locally sourced, seasonal produce. The menu includes mouth-watering briwats (similar to spring rolls), aromatic couscous and delicious sweet potato and coconut soup.

Moroccan Hospitality
The team at the riad – Rachid, Abdelmajid and Rachida – went out of their way to make my stay enjoyable. Rachida explained how to prepare her special beetroot, sweet potato and coconut soup and Rachid and Abdelmajid translated for me. They even bought me some Ras el Hanout (a Moroccan spice mix) so I could make the soup at home.

Whether you are a solo traveller, a family or a group of friends, Riad Le Pèlerin is a relaxing base to explore Marrakech and the surrounding areas. I’ve returned several times since my first visit, and I’m currently planning my next trip.
