Our Moroccan vintage blankets, featuring striped and plaid designs, were hand-woven in the High Atlas mountains for domestic use. In these remote villages, where yarn is often scarce, women have traditionally crafted rugs and blankets from whatever materials they can find. Some blankets are woven from cotton, while others blend cotton and wool or utilise recycled materials. Each blanket reflects the weaver’s resourcefulness, skill and creativity.

Plaid and Striped Blankets
Each blanket is unique, featuring colour palettes ranging from subtle pastels to bold, vibrant hues or a mix of both. The designs and colour combinations depend on the availability of yarn and the creator’s artistic eye.
Wedding blankets
Another type of Moroccan vintage blanket is the wedding blanket. Female relatives weave these blankets for a bride-to-be to wear as a cape on her wedding day. It is later used in the marital home as a bed, floor covering or wall hanging. Wedding blankets are hand-woven from cream and white wool and cotton and feature kilim bands and decorative metal sequins. Read more on our blog on Vintage Moroccan Wedding Blankets.
How To Incorporate These Unique Vintage Moroccan Blankets into Your Interiors
These beautifully imperfect blankets, with wobbly stripes, irregular checks, darns and frayed fringes, add colour, pattern, texture and interest to a room. Stripes and checks are versatile patterns that work well in contemporary, rustic and period properties. Both patterns work well with floral designs. The key to mixing patterns is to restrict the colour palette to a few complementary colours.
In a bedroom, drape one over the bed or use one of these unique designs to create an eye-catching headboard.
In a sitting room you could throw one over the back of a sofa, or a chair. If it’s a large medium weight blanket you could use it to cover the base of a sofa. Vintage Moroccan blankets also work well as kilim cubes or covers for ottomans. Depending on the size and design of the blanket, some pieces look amazing as wall hangings. You could also use heavier weight blankets as rugs, if you put slip pads underneath.
